introduced me to the field of literary translation. There will be difficulty in completing
this thesis without his instruction.
I would also like to express my deep gratitude to Professor Jin Wenning and
Professor Glen Phillips, who helped me a lot and never failed to be my encouragement.
Although they were very busy, they spared much of their precious time to give me
suggestions and ideas.
Thanks also go to Professor Ye Shengnian, Professor Wang Bin, Professor Zhen
Xiaoyuan, Professor Deng Zhiyong and Professor Dai Weihua, whose lectures have
opened a new horizon for me and the vast knowledge enriches me to further my
research and in future job.
I also owe my special thanks to my parents, my husband for their everlasting love
and support, to my friends and my classmates for their help and encouragement.
Last but not least, I am deeply grateful for the great help of those previous

ABSTRACT
The present thesis makes an attempt, in the light of translation theory of equivalent
effect, to probe into the translation of great Chinese classical novels, Shui Hu Zhuan. As
is known to all, the process of reading a literary text is a process of emotional
perception and aesthetic enjoyment. Literary translation should also reproduce this
aesthetic entertainment and effect as the original text. That’s to say, the target text
should have the similar esthetic effect as the original works does. Different from
traditional translation studies which mainly concentrate on the contrast between the
original text and the target text, the theory of equivalent effect shifts the focus of
translation from this contrast to the comparison of the reception of source text readers
and target text readers. From this perspective, equivalent effect is applicable in literary
translation. According to equivalent effect theory, the process of translating is a process
of communication, and this process depends largely on what is received by the reader of
the target text. Therefore judging a translation cannot only stop with a comparison of
corresponding lexical meanings, grammatical classes, and rhetorical devices between
source text and target text. What is important is the extent to which receptors correctly
understand target text. As for the relationship between equivalent effect principle and
liberal & literal translation, equivalent effect is a criterion for judging a translation. But
literal translation and liberal translation are the translation strategies that a translator has
to adopt in translating. The translator should flexibly use the two strategies in order to
achieve equivalent effect.
Shui Hu Zhuan, one of the four most famous Chinese classical novels, is the first
novel written in vernacular Chinese, which turns a new leaf in Chinese novel writing
and exerts great influence in the history of Chinese literature. In this novel several
hundred people who belong to different social status and have different educational
backgrounds are described. Each main character, as commented by Jin Shengtan, has his
typical personality, temperament, figure and speech. As far as its translations are
concerned, the most influential versions nowadays are Sidney Shapiro’s Outlaws of the
Marsh and Pearl Buck’s All Men are Brothers, which are chosen for this thesis.
A comparison of the two translations will be provided to judge whether they have
provided the closest possible natural equivalent of the source text in meaning and style,
and whether they have achieved, in the target reader, the same effect triggered by the
original text upon Chinese readers. In this thesis, a questionnaire is also carried out to
compare the readers reception of the two translations. After the comparison, a
conclusion is drawn that with a smart combination of literal translation and liberal
translation, Shapiro successfully renders the meaning and style of the original work, due
to which the artistic impact and esthetic effect can, to some degree, be conveyed. While
Pearl Buck aims to translate every detail of Chinese original into English without giving
any thought to the linguistic differences and readers’ ability to comprehend the
translation. As a result, her translation appears lacking in artistic merit and cannot
achieve the effect produced by the original.
Although Shapiro’s translation is a better translation among the translations that
exist at present, in his translation, there appear many obsolete expressions unfamiliar to
nowaday readers. Since new era calls for new translations to conform to readers’
expectations, new efforts must be made to translate this brilliant work and introduce
something closer to the true greatness of Chinese literature to modern Western readers.
