ABSTRACT
The paper focuses on catchwords, one of the most important aspects of language. It explores
the innate cognitive mechanism involved during the transmission of catchwords and demonstrates
that the spreading of catchwords largely involves a process of conceptual blending.
Research into catchwords was ignored for a long time, since most scholars thought that
catchwords were restricted to folk culture and exerted little influence upon the overall development
of human language. The volatility and instability of catchwords also contributed to the indifference
of scholars. With globalization and advancement of science and technology, the current society is
full of changes in various sectors. These social changes have accelerated the creation and
transmission of catchwords in linguistic field. It is gradually realized that the study of catchwords is
urgent and rewarding. Catchwords, as a popular phenomenon, reflect not only the lexical field, but
also the social field in a well-rounded way. They are one indispensable component in both
linguistic and social fields.
Over the last several years, there has been a growing interest in analyzing catchwords under
meme theory or pragmatic theory. Nevertheless, studies of catchwords from a cognitive perspective
are scarce. According to Cognitive Linguistics, language is based on human experience of the
world and the way it is perceived and conceptualized. Conceptual blending (also called conceptual
integration) is one major way in which people perceive and conceptualize the world. In this way,
language is closely connected to blending. Meaning construction of language, as a fundamental
conceptual operation, is largely a process of conceptual projection and blending.
In this connection, the present paper studies the meaning construction occurring during
catchwords transmission and demonstrates the conceptual blending involved in the process. The
author draws a corpus of many popular catchwords from our daily life. The meaning construction
in the communication of these catchwords is elaborated with different blending networks. The
interpretation of these examples, meanwhile, explores Conceptual Blending Theory in a deeper
way.

Chapter One Introduction

Chapter One Introduction
At the beginning of a research paper, it’s usually necessary to provide an overall
statement and give a short introduction of the thesis, the significance and the
organization of the study. Chapter One, as the introductory part, therefore aims to solve
these questions: why it is studied, what is being studied, and how it will be studied.
§1.1 Research Background
Why is this studied?
The idea of writing this paper first came to me while I was attending a lecture on
Cognitive Linguistics given by my mentor, Professor Wang Bin. I was greatly fascinated
by what Professor Wang talked about Cognitive Linguistics. It was from that lecture I
heard the term “conceptual blending” and became interested in it from then on. While
attending the Cognitive Linguistics lessons and studying under Professor Wang, I’ve
had assess to abundant material on Cognitive Linguistics, and become more and more
attracted to this new field and its various theories, particularly the working principles of
Lakoffs Metaphor Theory and Fauconniers Conceptual Blending Theory. Those works
on Cognitive Linguistics, such as Metaphors We Live By, and The Way We Think:
Conceptual Blending and the Mind’s Hidden Complexities, have initiated me into a
brand-new world of language – the relationship between language and human cognition.
People think in a blending way according to Conceptual Blending Theory. The Theory
applies to all aspects of social sciences, including linguistics. Many linguistic
phenomena have found better explanations from a blending perspective.
After the outbreak of the notorious 范跑跑 Incident, various 跑跑 incidents have
sprung up almost overnight. The phenomenon caught the attention of both the grass
roots and the scholars. People in different walks of life are talking about different kinds
of 跑 跑 . How does 跑 跑 transmit in such a comprehensive way? What are the
cognitive mechanisms involved during the transmission? Could Conceptual Blending
Theory provide some explanation to this phenomenon and other similar ones? Bearing
these questions in mind, the author starts her investigation.
Conceptual Blending in Catchwords Transmission
2
§1.2 Researching Topic
What is being studied?
The paper chooses catchwords as its subject and focuses on catchwords
transmission. It probes into the human cognitive mechanism involved in catchwords
transmission, aiming to elaborate the meaning construction during catchwords
transmission with cognitive strategies, such as metaphor, mental spaces, and conceptual
blending. According to the paper, the transmission of catchwords usually involves an
innate cognitive mechanism and it is, cognitively speaking, a process of conceptual
blending.
Catchword is an important linguistic and cultural phenomenon. It reflects the
general features of language, and meanwhile, connects closely with information
transmission. The way catchwords spread mirrors the way human communicates. It
demonstrates human’s information communication. With the ever-faster development of
society, people are witnessing catchwords appearing and disappearing day in and day
out. Catchwords are receiving more and more attention from many scholars and
researchers. Articles on catchwords have sprouted up quickly. Although catchwords
have become a favorite topic for sociologists and linguists, the studies are still
incomplete and relatively inconsistent. Most of the previous studies focus on the
superficial phenomenon rather than its innate mechanism. There are few studies
conducted from a cognitive perspective. Nearly all the studies are confined to an
objective description of the phenomenon, with few of them concerning the innate
cognitive origin of catchwords transmission. On cnki.net in Oct. 2009, 1406 entries
popped up under the key word “catchwords”, with 1151 entries under “catchwords” and
“meme”. In contrast, there were few entries when tapping in “catchwords” and
“cognition” as key words.
Cognitive Linguistics, since its day of birth, has begun to exhibit its tremendous
explanatory power on all aspects of language. Conceptual blending, a major cognitive
model, is embedded in our daily life rather than just a salient phenomenon. It is, as
Fauconnier and Turner stated, “the way we think”. It’s crucial to apply this advanced
way of thinking in analyzing catchwords transmission. Therefore, the thesis aims to
explain the replication, transmission, and expression of catchwords from this brand-new
perspective.
