On Chinese Translation of the Names of Cocktails
Abstract: As a unique component of wine culture, cocktail has been gaining great
popularity in China with the increasing cultural exchange between China and western
societies. The ever-growing consumption, combined with the novelty of cocktails, makes it
important to have a systematic translation strategy of cocktail names. But the fact is, up to
now, there has been no researches done on Chinese translation of cocktail names, although
some can be found on cocktail history, cocktail categorization and cocktail mixology. The
lack of research on Chinese translation of cocktail names has led to the different levels of
cocktails translated names. While some names possess great aesthetic values, others are
unaesthetic at all, even degrading sometimes. The aim of this thesis is to combine the existing
researches on cocktail culture and translation theories, categorize cocktail names and discuss
the translation methods of cocktail names under different categorizations.

1. Introduction
A cocktail is an alcoholic drink consisting of a spirit or several spirits mixed with other
ingredients, such as fruit juice, lemonade, or cream. Just by looking at this definition, we
could already speculate that there could be a huge amount of possible combinations. And that
is backed up by the reality. Although there are only 66 IBA(International Bartenders
Association) official cocktails according to IBAs list, we have to note that they are just some
of the most notable and frequently-made cocktails around the world and that new cocktails are
being invented all the time. The World Cocktail Championship, for instance, helps to spark
the invention of new cocktails every year. And its safe to say that as long as imagination
exists, new cocktails will be invented. All of these illustrates that the supply is huge.
And the demand for cocktails is huge as well. Just in Hangzhou, therere more than five
hundred bars according to Baidu Map. And if we include those western restaurants which
serve certain types of cocktails, the amount would be huge.
The ever-rising supplies and demands of cocktails make a systematic translation theory
of cocktail names extremely essential. Yet so far, nobody has ever proposed a theory at all.
And the lack of a guiding theory is part of the reason why the qualities of the translated names
are uneven. While there are certain good translated names in existence, there are still some
distasteful names in use and quite some names not being translated at all. And this makes the
cultural elements not successfully conveyed during the cultural exchange. More importantly,
since cocktail is a certain type of commodity, sickening cocktail names or lack of translated
cocktail names will drive away potential customers.
One thing to note is, although nobody has done any research on the translation of
cocktail names, there are quite a few researches done on cocktail culture and categorization.
And these researches can help people to better understand the background and value of
cocktail names.
This paper presents a tentative study on cocktail names and their Chinese translation. By
studying and evaluating a number of typical examples of cocktail names, the writer attempts
to categorize them, sum up their features and functions, analyze the guiding principles, and
propose the techniques for their translation. Hopefully, this paper would serve as a good
attempt to step into this brand new area and inspire more relevant studies to come.

2. Cocktail Culture and Cocktail Names
2.1 Cocktail Culture
Cocktail culture is both splendid and mysterious. It is closely related to the history of
western countries, especially America. And we can still see its popularity through the various
entertaining activities and competitions held nowadays. Many books, including bar guides,
have tried to dwell on various aspects of cocktail culture. And also because of the alcohol in
cocktails, there have been many concerns over hangover and cure. Understanding cocktail
culture will help us better grasp the background and value of cocktail names.
2.1.1 Cocktail History
The origin of the word cocktail” is still in dispute. And nobody knows when or where
cocktails were first invented, or who invented cocktails. Several tales exist, yet none have
been confirmed. In The Joy of Mixology, Gary Regan (2003: 4-6) listed seven often told tales.
This collection is so far the most detailed one and has been cited by cocktail sites and authors
multiple times.
Luckily, there are some historical recordings of the use of the word cocktail, which
give us a basic idea as to when the word cocktail is in existence.
On 16 March 1798, Londons The Morning Post and Gazetteer reported that a pub
owner won a lottery and erased all his customers debts:
A publican, in Downing-street, who had a share of the 20,000 l. prize, rubbed out all
his scores, in a transport of joy: This was an humble imitation of his neighbour, who,
when he drew the highest prize in the State Lottery, not only rubbed out, but actually
broke scores with his old customers, and entirely forgot them (Brown&Miller, 2009).
The next week, on 20 March 1798, The Morning Post and Gazetteer satirically listed
details of 17 politicians pub debts, including the following:
Mr. Pitt,
two petit vers of Lhuile de Venus
Ditto, one of perfeit amour
