Abstract: As a dominating part winding through the poetry, poetic metaphor plays a
significant role in enhancing the glamour of poetry. Based on the cognitive linguistics, this

love lyrics to see that conceptual metaphor contributes a lot in understanding the love theme
of Sara Teasdale’s love lyrics. It mainly discusses how the cognitive mapping and function of
love metaphor work in the love lyrics. The domestic studies about Sara Teasdale’s love lyrics

1. Introduction
1.1 Sara Teasdale and Her Lyrics
Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) is one of the most charming American lyrical poets in
the early 20th century. Since her first collection Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems was
published in 1907, the continuous published Rivers to the Sea (1915), Flame and Shadow
(1920), etc. gave her great reputation. Her third poetry collection Love Songs published in
1917 won the Columbia Poetry Prize (the forerunner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry). The
simple verse focused on love, the expressions about love and the themes of love won the
admiration and gratitude of men and women through the 20th century.
Born in an old American family in St. Louis, Missouri in 1884, Sara Teasdale was a
purely American poet. After the tide of migration to the Middle West, her paternal grandfather
became a Baptist minister, which was her family tradition as New England ancestry. This
background of Puritan made Teasdale lead a life of self-discipline, especially in her love
experience. Thus in most of her lyrics, implicit and conservative words are often used to
describe the spiritual love. As the youngest child sixteen years younger than her closest
sibling, Teasdale had a poor health condition and a lonely childhood. Solitude nursed her
character of sensitivity and excellent sagacity in poems. After graduating from Hosmer Hall, a
private girl’s school, Teasdale became associated with a group of creative artistic women in St.
Louis known as the Potters during which she published her first her first collection Sonnets to
Duse and Other Poems.
The years of love in Sara Teasdales life contributed a lot to the creation of her love
lyrics. John Wheelock Hall was the man with whom Teasdale fell in deep love but their love
turned out to be in vain. However, Wheelock remained her closest friend and confidant
throughout her life(Mueller,1999). Then in 1913, Teasdale had a platonic relationship with
the poet Vachel Lindsay. His excess zest and poor financial situation exhausted her and
Teasdale finally was married to Ernst Filsinger in 1914. However, the marriage ends in
divorce in 1929. It was that period that Teasdale published Love Songs, which is widely
considered the most successful and typical Teasdale poetry. As her dear friend and fellow poet,
Jessie Rittenhouse (1927) said: as one rereads Rivers To The Sea, the finest of Miss
Teasdale's early volumes, and Love Songs, one is instantly a thrall to that delight, that winged
