Abstract

As a renowned writer, essayist and translator in modern Chinese history, Lin Yutang

enjoyed world-wide appraisal and fame among his contemporaries. With his special

educational and cultural background, he promoted the studies of translation by combining it

with linguistics and psychology. Meanwhile, he made tremendous contributions to the

spreading of Chinese culture to the world through the translation of volumes of Chinese

classical works into English. His contributions are permanent and his art of translation is

worth appreciating and learning. However, the study of Lin Yutang’s translation is still far

from sufficient in Chinese Mainland.

This thesis makes a tentative study of Lin Yutang’s translation theory and practice. It

first gives a brief introduction of Lin Yutang as a successful cultural interpreter. Chapter One

provides a detailed analysis of his translation theory as reflected in his famous article “On

Translation”. Chapter Two focuses on the study of Lin Yutang’s translation from a macro

perspective, in which Lin Yutang’s cultural attitude, translation purpose, selection of source

text and translation strategies are analyzed. Chapter Three is a case study of Lin’s translation

in Six Chapters of A Floating Life from two perspectives: the linguistic and the cultural, so as

to reveal Lin’s translation art and strategy and the practical significance of his ideas of

translation. The last part is the summarization of the study.

摘要

作为中国近代史上知名的作家，散文家和翻译家，林语堂凭借其优越的教育与文

化背景，在中国翻译研究史上首次将语言学和心理学运用于翻译研究，从而推动了翻

译研究的发展。同时，林语堂翻译了大量的中国古代文学作品，为中国文化向世界的

传播作出了巨大的贡献。他的翻译艺术值得后人欣赏，翻译策略值得后人借鉴。然而，

在中国大陆，人们对林语堂的研究，特别是在其翻译方面的研究还存在明显的不足。

本文试图研究林语堂的翻译理论与实践。文章开头先简单介绍了林语堂作为一个

成功的文化传播者取得的成就，以及林语堂研究所经历的几个阶段与研究现状。接着

第一章详细论述了其著名的翻译论著《论翻译》一文中所体现的翻译理论。第二章从

宏观的角度研究林语堂的中英翻译实践，分析了其独特的文化观，翻译目的，翻译原

文以及翻译策略的选择。第三章从语言和文化两个层次分析了林语堂在《浮生六记》

译本中的翻译实践。最后一部分是作者对本文研究的总结。林语堂一生致力于东西方

文化的介绍与沟通，尤其是在翻译理论研究和弘扬中华文化方面，成绩卓著，影响深

远。在全球各民族文化大交融的今天，研究和总结其翻译理论，技巧与经验，对发展

翻译事业，促进国际文化交流是不无裨益的。

Introduction

When the name, “Lin Yutang”, is mentioned, people usually think of him as a

writer or an essayist. As a matter of fact, Lin Yutang was also a successful translator

that made tremendous contribution to world literature and his achievements in

translation can never be ignored. Lin Yutang is regarded as another great translator in

China nourished by Fujian Province besides Yan Fu

（严复）

, Gu Hongming

（辜鸿明）

and Lin Shu（林纾）. Lin certainly deserves the appraisal. He successfully translated a

great number of Chinese classics into English, which can hardly be achieved by the

scholars that lack the mastery of both Chinese and English languages. The number of

the Chinese classics translated by him far surpassed that of the translations done by his

predecessors （万平近 ,林语堂选集 , 37）. In addition, in order to further enrich

Chinese culture and import Western culture to the Chinese nation, he also translated

some of the famous English works into Chinese, such as Randes’ The Biography of

Henrik Ibsen and His Love Letters （《易卜生评传及其情书》）and George Bernard

Shaw’s Pygmalion（《卖花女》, Russel’s Women and Knowledge（《女子与知识》）

etc.(郭著章 102). Lu Xun (鲁迅) recognized Lin’s talents in translation long before he

was admired by his readers and peers. He suggested to Lin that he should translate

more Western literary works into Chinese. Although Lin did not follow Lu Xun’s

advice and spent most of his time and energy on translating Chinese works into

English, the contributions made by him to world literature in both translation practice

and theory were immense.

Lin Yutang had such a good command of English that some people with English

as their mother-tongue feel their own English inferior to his when they read his works.

His Moment in Peking was recommended for Nobel Prize. His works in English, such

as My Country and My People,The Importance of Living, etc. all made great hit in the

west and were translated into many languages. Lin Yutang’s outstanding manipulation

of both Chinese and English languages, combined with his in-depth understanding of

both Chinese and English cultures served as foundation for him to be a qualified

translator. His translated works were well received by Western readers. Lin Yutang, as

a translator and cultural interpreter, contributed much to cultural exchange between

China and other countries. Due to his unremitting efforts as well as those of others,

Chinese culture has become more and more widespread and influential in other
