Betty Jones was only eight years old when she first tried playing the drums. This was

during a lunchtime music club at school, which she only went to because it was cold and

rainy. At the same time her friends were in the playground playing baseball – a sport that

Betty hated. Of all the musical instruments that the teacher had in the music room, the drums

were the most interesting to Betty. She thought it was cool that there were many different

shapes and sizes of drums, and she wanted to hit them, to see what they sounded like.

Now Betty is fourteen and gives concerts around the country. She also has her own

YouTube channel and gets over a million hits a year. What’s amazing is that Betty hasn’t ever

been to a drum lesson. ‘You can learn anything on the Internet, so I’ve never felt it was

important for me to take classes,’ explains Betty.

Giving concerts wasn’t easy for Betty at the beginning because usually she only played

drums alone in her bedroom when she came home from school. At her first concert, she

played in a band with adults. She could feel hundreds of pairs of eyes looking at her, and that

made her feel frightened. So, does Betty enjoy being famous now? ‘I didn’t plan to be

famous,’ she says. ‘All I want is to show others what I love. I don’t think I’m someone

special. I just want everyone to have a great time at my concerts.’

W: Wow! It’s such a beautiful day! The sky is so blue.

M: I guess… It’s been nice all summer, so I don’t notice it as much. Maybe I’m getting

W: I wasn’t expecting it to be like this. My dad came here a few years ago and he said the air

quality was really bad.

M: He was not wrong. It used to be terrible. In summer, you’d often get thick smog covering

the whole city, but it’s improved greatly in the last ten years or so.

W: What changed?

M: I think it was driven by people’s attitudes. Ten years ago, few people were keen on

environmental issues, but nowadays there’s much more awareness of things like air quality

and how it can affect your health.

W: Sure, but that can’t be the only reason.

M: Well, no. The local government also brought in new laws and rules. They introduced limits

on driving in the city centre, made it illegal to use wood or coal fires for heating, and moved a

lot of heavy industry away from the city.
