从女性主义译论视角看张爱玲《海上花》英译

摘要

张爱玲以其小说而著称，其小说在那个年代具有一定的社会影响力，大多数

以描写恋爱中的男女关系为主。除了作家这个身份外，张爱玲还是一位难得的翻

译家，她翻译过许多著名的国外作品。另外，张爱玲的汉英翻译作品独树一帜，

她翻译的中国清朝作家韩邦庆的狎邪小说《海上花》别具一格，该原著是用吴语

方言写成的。本论文作者将目光锁定这部作品，试图从女性主义翻译理论角度对

《海上花》进行深层次、多方位分析。作者发觉《海上花》英译本中有许多女性

主义翻译特色，比如，女性主义译者倾向于运用撰序、增补、劫持等特定的翻译

策略，这些策略在译本中都有较明显体现。论文提出《海上花》英译本具有女性

主义翻译思想。

首先，论文以女性主义翻译理论作为理论基础，并通过剖析张爱玲的三重身

份总结其翻译思想，论文认为女性主义情结直接影响了张爱玲的翻译过程，并促

使其翻译与女性主义翻译理论不谋而合，此类研究在学界少有涉及。然后，论文

作者在第四章即论文主体部分试图探索女性主义翻译理论是如何被运用于《海上

花》英译本的，并从张爱玲的女性主义情结切入，从“凸显女性主体性”、“打破

两元对立”、“创新翻译策略”等女性主义翻译理论的三个典型层面对《海上花》

英译本进行分析。

最后，论文得出结论，认为《海上花》是一部反映女性主义翻译理论的典型

之作。在中国译者接受西方女性主义翻译理论思想方面，《海上花》英译本或许

可为此研究提供参考。必须承认，张爱玲不仅是一位著名的女作家，还是位颇具

天赋的翻译家。

Introduction

1. Significance of the Research

The translation of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai is a magnificent event in the

Chinese history of translation: the original text is written by Han Bangqing in Wu

dialect, which limits its spread and thus buries its worth. Zhang Ailing’s excavation

makes it worthwhile to be the subject of my research. After the publication of the

translation of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai, however, though some scholars have

made some studies of the translation, few people think it as a professional translation

and have given it a comprehensive and profound analysis, especially from a

perspective of Feminist Translation Theory.

At present the studies on Zhang Ailing’s translation of The Sing-song Girls of

Shanghai from the perspective of Feminist Translation Theory is almost a margin

which leaves us a lot of space to explore. This thesis, from the perspective of the

Feminist Translation Theory, attempts to make an analysis of the English translation

of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai, and reach the conclusion that the translation is

branded by the feminist translation idea and that Zhang Ailing adopts some feminist

translation strategies that conform to the Feminist Translation Theory.

2. Research Methodology

The translation version studied in this thesis is The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai

published by Columbia University Press (2005).The Feminist Translation Theory is

employed so as to objectively analyze the translation of the novel. From the 1970s,

the feminists felt their anger mounting for the unfair treatment not just in the political

field, but the cultural field, and in correspondence feminism theory was in vogue

including the Feminist Translation Theory. Simon’s Gender in Translation: Cultural

Identity and the Politics of Transmission (1996) even is an authoritative work in the

study of The Feminist Translation Theory today which arouses the translation circle to

rethink of the status of translators and thus becomes popular and a brand new

perspective to analyze translation works.

Besides, the present author will take the advantage of all things available and

will try to leave no stone unturned in collecting materials, and the present study will

try to learn from other researches as much as possible and combine the qualitative

analysis with quantitative analysis so as to make the present study more convincing.

The present author also will try to avoid being subjective and one-sided when looking

at problems and has to give a description in general of the influence of Feminist

Translation Theory upon the Chinese translators, because it is too hard to quantify the

influence of Feminist Translation Theory upon the Chinese translators, which is not a

mathematic notion itself but is internalized and not so obvious. In addition, inductive

reasoning and classification of the translation’s properties will be adopted.

3. Organization of the Thesis

From the perspective of the Feminist Translation Theory, this thesis attempts to

make an analysis of how the English translation of The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai

reveals some ideas of the Feminist Translation Theory.

At the beginning is “Introduction”. It briefly states the significance, methodology

of the research and organization of the thesis. Chapter One is the literature review (the

status quo) of the researches of the English translation of The Sing-song Girls of

Shanghai and Zhang Ailing’s translation.

Chapter Two takes the Feminist Translation Theory as the theoretical foundation

of this study. It contains the formation of Feminist Translation Theory and its main

viewpoints.

Chapter Three takes Zhang Ailing’s profile into account so as to draw out her

translation idea, which is elaborated from three levels, namely, “Zhang Ailing as a

Woman”, “Zhang Ailing as a Writer” and “Zhang Ailing as a Translator”. Finally

Zhang Ailing’s feminist translation idea is introduced.

Chapter Four is the main body, studying The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai from

the perspective of the Feminist Translation Theory, making a comprehensive analysis

of how its English translation reflects the characteristics of the Feminist Translation

Theory, and at last concluding that the translation is labeled by the feminist translation

idea.

The Conclusion part summarizes the research and points out the limitations of

the thesis.
