ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The task of developing an academic thesis and giving yet another more analysis to
a previously fully explored novel is too exciting and challenging for anyone to go it
alone. As an object of inquiry, it is complex enough to accommodate in this paper such
insightful achievements made by the forerunners in the narrative field. I am therefore
grateful to be able to name at least some professors, friends and fellow students who
helped make this thesis possible, enriching my own understanding of a novel and
experience in writing the paper.
I thank, first, Professor Ye Shengnian, my supervisor for early consultations that
helped give shape to this thesis. I also thank my friend Dr. Mao Yanan for his invaluable
advice while I was soliciting, assembling the needed materials and was embarking on
the writing of this thesis. Professor Ye’s careful and extensive reports on a first draft of
this thesis helped me rethink the introduction and enabled me to clarify and refine the
whole thesis. To those whose fruitful study paved the way for my further exploration I
offer a blanket statement of gratitude: without their keen insights and hard work this
thesis would have simply not existed. I’m grateful as well to Phillip Gllan, who helped
me revise the introduction and the conclusion and gave a detailed advice on many
aspects.
I owed a special debt to Professor Jin Wenning for her relentless commitment to
academic work which has encouraged me and spurred me on in the literary study and
for her wonderful lecture which has inspired me a lot in attempting to carry out any
concrete study of a literary work.
More generally, I would like to thank Professor Deng Zhiyong, Wang Bin, Wu
Yuxing, Dai Weihua, Zheng Xiaoyuan, Wang Defu, from whose courses during my
study I leant what would benefit my thesis greatly.
ABSTRACT
William Faulkner is considered one of the best writers not only in the United States
but also in the world. The instant The Sound and the Fury came out it was accepted
warmly. This novel, like Faulkners previous effort, explores the deep south of the
United States in the period of the transition following the Civil War, and demonstrating
his great ability to grasp the living and history of his country
In The Sound and the Fury the writer employs the stream of consciousness to
ensure that the narrative is told through multiple-points of view and with alternative
sequencing of time. Moreover, the main line that carries the narrative forward in each of
the three sections out of the total of four has almost no any genuine plots a traditional
novel should have and these four parts are connected to a certain extent so that the
information of each part complement each other to bring them into a whole. These
factors combined together make the novel a difficult reading.
In view of this, the writer of this thesis thinks it necessary to give the novel an
in-depth analysis of its multiplicity of narrative perspective and diversity of narrative
progression and the deferred and suppressed information caused by their combination
by making use of the available commentaries by the scholars who have already claimed
in the field of narratology so that Faulkners novel can prove itself an elaborate writing
for construction. The introduction of this thesis is mainly devoted to a brief review of
current trends in the exploration of the novel approached via the perspective of
narratology and why the author embarks on this thesis.
The first chapter of this thesis is dedicated to a brief analysis of the three brothers
who serve as not only the fictional characters but also the narrators in the novel, of their
personality, their roles to the narratives, and their language performance. Then the
second chapter is thrown in to give a discussion of its diversity of narrative progression
on the basis of the multiple narrative perspectives in terms of the text generation. The
writer argues that the construction of this novel is, above all, a demonstration of rhetoric
progression or trajectory, namely it isn’t unfolded along the chronological sequencing
typical of any traditional novel. The narrative, having no genuine causal relation, seems
to be arranged to meet a certain rhetorical effect. And it can be pointed out that the
novel lacks the plot of a novel. As such, we might as well declare that what a novel is all
about is its theme and this is what William Faulkner wants to achieve.
Another major concern in this regard is the verbal generators. Every section of the
novel has marked characteristics in terms of language performance but these languages
are not used to describe these narrators and what the novel mainly shows. Rather they
are used to match the narrators personality and serve as the vehicle around which the
narration unrolls. In their narration, some objects, names and even a certain smell can
more often than not give rise to a new act or a passage of a narrators personal
monologue, so much so that a sentence in a Quentin’s part is frequently disrupted only
to regain its course shortly after.
The third chapter of this thesis is devoted to the exploration of the novel’s narrative
progression and its multiple trajectories from the perspective of the sequencing of time
(physical and psychological). Full illustration has been given to how the novel The
Sound and the Fury assumes a progressive narrative progression from both physical and
psychological sequencing of time.
While in the fourth chapter, the author of this thesis finds it necessary to bypass the
phenomenon of what others call retelling and the repeating narration to focus on the
deferred and suppressed information resulting from the novel’s narrative arrangement.
The whole novel moves from one section to another with information piling up to fill
the void the previous section leaves.
