ABSTRACT
With the bankruptcy of the New Century Financial Corporation in March
2007,the global financial crisis has burst out from the provenance of U.S. sub-prime
mortgage. It has a shock impact on the global finance and the impact of the global
financial crisis is so huge that global finance have not yet move away from the
economic bottom till now.
The paper intends to analyze more in-depth about international commercial bank
who suffered heavy losses in this global financial crisis—Citigroup as an example, and
aim to help to Chinese commercial bank to learn the experience and lessons from it.
The preface introduces the background and significance of the topic, research
ideas and paper structure 、literature and direction of further research.. The second
chapter is a historical review about the development of Citigroup. Citigroup grows up
from an ordinary commercial bank to be a top integrated financial services group by
suffered many ups and .The root cause of the financial crisis is analyzed in the third
chapter. After the mortgage institutions give out the sub-loans, in order to speed up cash
flow and dispersed subprime mortgage risk, Subprime mortgage derivative products
diversification, increasing financing channels and lower financing costs. At the same
time, the sub-prime risk also transmitted the risk to the securities and insurance
industries, various types of investors and even the whole world. The lack of reasonable
and effective supervision of the authority of U.S. financial regulation on financial
innovation, in particular the development of financial derivative product is one of the
reasons of the crisis explosion. The influence of this financial crisis to the Citigroup is
analyzed in the fourth chapter. It makes an analysis from the financial situation of
2007-2008 Citigroup in terms of profitability, capital adequacy, asset quality and
subprime business etc. The reason why Citibank in crisis, from the business perspective,
it involved large high-risk business; from the deeper aspect, when the enterprise expand
his business rapidly, he neglects the development of risk management what is a
radical-oriented business strategy. The fifth chapter analyzes the response strategy of
Citigroup to overcome the financial crisis. U.S. Government issued a series of
assistance programs in order to help U.S. banking out of crisis as soon as possible, a
huge part of it to do the relief on Citigroup. Citigroup has also taken the expansion of
capital, assets of the Group restructuring, layoffs and spending cuts and other measures
