ABSTRACT
In order to meet bank’s more complex risk management needs, limit their blind
expansion, west commercial banks put forward a new capital concept—economic
capital. Through capitalizing risks, economic capital can achieve a full measurement of
risks and can demonstrate capital’s risk restrict function. Through bring risks into return
rate targets, economic capital can combine risk and income closely, which give banks a
more accurate way to measure their value creating ability. The superiority this concept
has demonstrated makes it a widely used risk and value managing method in west
advanced commercial banks.
Through build an economic capital income system under the economic capital and
its return rate concept, this disseertation aims to discuss the relationship between
economic capital and bank’s risk and value management. By testing this system in our
bank’s practice, this disseertation aims to show this system’s management value.
First of all, we established an economic capital income system under economic
capital concept, then gave a detailed analysis and explanation of the system’s thought
way, management process and significance of application.
Secondly, we discussed the economic capital income system’s risk restricting
function. Through measuring bank’s economic capital, we show how to decide the
bank’s capital needs. Through analyzing the system’s using of economic capital concept,
we explained how to use this system to avoid risk accumulate and ensure the bank’s
safty.
Thirdly, we discussed the economic capital system’s value creating function. Under
the guidance of maximizing shareholder’s value, we constructed a two-factor economic
capital allocation model and solved the one-factor model’s problem of only emphasized
on risk. Then on the basis of economic capital allocation, we gave a further discussion
of performance appraisal, business structure adjustment and how the three of them
format an organic cycle to help the bank adding its value.
In the end, we bring this two-factor model into practice. By using it in a branch of
China Commercial Bank’s four loan transaction, we conducted a real test of capital
allocation, performance appraisal and business structure adjustment. At the same time,
in light of China’s commercial banks’ main problems, we proposed some feasible policy
